Hey Everybody,

I'm trying to come up with a calendar of Social Ministry Events, Activities and collections for the first 6 months of 2010. If you have any ideas, or anything already planned, email me and let me know. If you would like to stage or plan an event that will contribute to our Social Ministry efforts, please let me know. It helps to coordinate these things so we don't duplicate our efforts.
Everyone at ROL did a great job in 2009. Confirmation and Youth Ministries contributed exceptionally with volunteers and collections last year. We are already off to a good start in 2010 with the Confirmation Epiphany Project this last weekend. You that worked so hard to help "the least of our Brothers and Sisters" know who you are, and so do we. But more important, our Lord Jesus Christ knows who you are. God bless you.
So let's keep up our creative efforts in 2010
God bless you all and Mahalo,

Bob

Neighbors in Need

This web page is a list of items that our Social Ministry at Resurrection of the Lord will collect and distribute to those in need. Some items on the list are for a short term monthly project and others are on an ongoing basis.

We collect at the table on the lanai after all Masses and anytime during the week at the parish office. You can also arrange for us to pick up items of need at your location by emailing: matthew25@clearwire.net or calling 808-382-8655 to make arrangement for pickup. And of course, items needed by particular charitable organizations listed below, can be given directly to those orginazations.

And of course, we can always use cash donations to support our social ministry efforts at Resurrection of the Lord. You can drop cash or checks in our blue coffee collection cans when you see them on the lanai or at the church exits, or in the shoebox that is permanently placed in the narthex. You can put checks, made out to "Resurrection or the Lord" in the collection baskets during Mass with a note in the memo area of the check: "for ROL Social Ministry". The money collected for social ministry use goes towards financing our Lighthouse Homeless Shelter monthly dinner serving, and buying items, like the ones listed below, for those in need.

Thank you for all your efforts and donations on behalf of those in need. May God bless you and may the our Lord, the Living Jesus Christ, be in your life and in your heart.

We need your help!

Please consider conducting a necessity or fund drive for IHS. Our most needed items right now are toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste), towels (used or new), socks, and new underwear. We are also always in need of gift cards to places like Longs, Walmart, Safeway, Foodland, Target, etc, so that our guests can purchase the things that they need for their families.

If you are interested in conducing a drive for IHS, please click here for more details.

"Love in practice is a hard and dreadful thing compared to love in dreams."
Do you know where the food goes that is collected at the side of the altar before mass or during the collection of gifts? It is taken by our parish members to 2 other parish food pantries to be distributed to those in need. Those parishes are Sacred Hearts in Waianae and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Pearl City. Sacred Hearts feeds about 90 families every other week. Our Lady of Good Counsel feeds about 150 families a week. Alice, one of the directors of the OLOGC pantry, told me that they often run out of food and that ROL has been a blessing, saving them many times with our donations. These are just 2 of the many parishes that maintain food and toiletry supplies for the needy in their communities. Although Resurrection of the Lord does not maintain its own food pantry, it is still fulfilling the request of our Lord Jesus Christ to "feed the hungry" by collecting and delivering food to those parishes that do. This is the very essence of our Catholic Social teaching and our faith.
The Christmas season is over. In this Ordinary time of the year, we have a tendency to cut back on our charitable giving. But with the economy as bad as it is, the need is greater than ever. Can we do more? How much could we collect and distribute if everyone at mass today brought just one can, or one bag of rice, or one box of none perishable food each week to mass to fulfill the desire of Our Lord Jesus Christ? How much would it cost us and how much could we gain by this simple act of charity?
Food can be donated by placing it at the altar before mass or during the presentation of gifts. It can also be dropped off at the parish office during the weekday. Only non perishable food can be collected. Toiletry supplies such as toilet paper, tooth brushes & tooth paste, and soap & shampoo are also needed.
Thank you and God Bless You,
ROL Social Ministry

Matthew 25: 35-40
'For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.'
Then the righteous will answer him and say
'Lord when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison,
and visit you?' And the King will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for
one of these least brothers of mine,
you did for me.'

God wants us
to be our brother's keeper.

To feed the hungry,
to clothe the naked,
to shelter the homeless,
to instruct the ignorant,
at a personal sacrifice,
is what God
wants us to do.

What we give to the poor
for Christ's sake
is what we carry with us
when we die.

As Jean-Jacques Rousseau say:
"When man dies
he carries
in his clutches hands
only that which
he has given away."

Dear Fr. Minchak

On behalf of Catholic Charities Hawaii and the families we serve, I would like
to thank you and Resurrection of the Lord parish for all of the wonderful
Christmas gifts that were received by our needy families. Catholic Charities
Hawai'i is truly blessed to have your parish as a community partner.

Your staff was exceptional in their enthusiasm and effort in coordinating the
Chritmas program. We sincerely appreciate the work of (name withheld by request)
in organizing the program. She and other volunteers helped to make this a memorable
Chritmas for
many families.

Thank you again for your continued support of Catholic Charities Hawaii.

With warm aloha,

Jerome E. Rauckhorst
President and Chief Executive Officer

Dear Fr. Paul,

I am writing to you to thank you and your parish family for your generous donations of food on behalf of the needy families and individuals we are privileged to serve. We are so very grateful that we can count on Resurrection of the Lord Church's consistent support and would like to especially thank Mr. Leonard Chang an the other volunteers who have delivered your donations of food to us.

As you may have heard, our pantry was empty of food and good people from all over the island came to our rescue in a big way! Our pantry is once again full and we are so relieved that we will be able to continue to serve the needy twice a week. During this financial crisis, we have seen our numbers climbing at an alarming rate. We currently serve 600 to 800 people per month and we expect this number to increase during the summer.

Again, thank you for your continued support. May you and your parish family have a blessed Easter Season!

Sincerely,

Fr. Pascual Abaya IV
Administrator
Our Lady of Good Counsel Church

Ten things we can do for our Lord and the least among us.

1. Serve: Our Lord's time on this earth was all about service. Service to you and me.
How can we in return serve him? By serving the least among us, we serve Our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Volunteer: Help ROL at our monthly IHS breakfast or monthly Lighthouse evening meal.
Volunteer to help the Hawaii Foodbank, Catholic Charities Hawaii or many other worthwhile local organizations.

3. Love: To love another person is to see the face of God. Any service we are involved in must be done as an act of love.
Unconditional love for our Lord Jesus Christ and our Brothers and Sisters in need. Our church is not about personal
avoidance of hell, but salvation for all souls by our faith, acts, love and prayers; bringing souls to Christ is our goal.

4. Care: If we are truly members of one holy, catholic and apostolic church in the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
then we need to care for and about the least among us. We need to act on that caring. Even if it is just in
small acts, unseen to all but God, we need to care and to act.

5. Feed: Bring non-perishable food to mass for gifts to be distributed to the hungry. Even one can or box is appreciated.
Buy an extra fast food meal or sandwich and give it to the brother or sister digging through a trash can. We all see them.

6. Clothe: Give the clothes you no longer wear, but is in good condition, to organizations that distribute it to the poor.
Bring them to the Church and we'll distribute them to the poor.

7. Visit: Do you know any older persons that live alone? Any one in a hospital or home that no one visits? Visit them.
Take them something to eat. Read to them. Listen to their stories. Drive them to the store, doctors, and our church.
Pray with them. Wash them. Care for them. Love them.

8. Inspire: Invite your family and friends to join you in service. Create your own social service projects and get others
involved. Share your ideas and projects with us.

9. Vote: Vote for candidates that support Catholic values and beliefs, like Pro Life. Check out
http://www.procon.org for information on candidate's positions.

10. Pray: Pray for our brothers and sisters in need; the homeless, the hungry, the vulnerable, the sick, the lonely,
the addicted and the incarcerated. Pray in your room. Pray with your family. Pray with your friends.
Pray with those in need. Prayer is a powerful tool.
