“The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue,
that I may know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.”

Isiah 50:4

When  will you serve as a Lector?

A lector or commentator may serve at any one of ROL’s Sabbath masses:

Saturday 5:15pm
Sunday 7:30am
Sunday 9:30am

Lectors and Commentators may also serve during special religious celebrations, i.e. Lent, Triduum, Easter and Holy Days of Obligations and at other masses, as needed.

Serving as a Lector/Commentator

When you answer the call to be a minister of the word or Lector (one who proclaims the Bible readings to the assembled faith community), you enter a deeper relationship with the word of God as revealed in sacred scripture. You take upon yourself the duty and privilege of bringing the printed word to life – making it flesh, so to speak. Our ministry, as a reader gives voice to God’s healing and strengthening word as it goes forth, achieving the purpose for which God sent it. In every sense, you become a prophet – one who speaks for God. If you share the passion to want to know more about God’s word and want to share your time and talent of “speaking” God’s word, please consider becoming a Lector!

The varying roles of our ministry are:

Lector I - - - - -  Proclaims the First Reading.
Lector II - - - - - Proclaims the Second Reading.
Commentator - - Addresses the faith community of the Intentions of the Mass.

Where do we meet?
When do members of the ministry meet?
Are there attendance requirements?

  • Scheduled lectors and commentators are to be at church 15 minutes prior to mass to:

  • Sign-in, review their reading or intentions for the mass, and join in prayer with Father and the other ministers of the mass.

  • Generally there are at least two (2) meetings per year (usually during October and March).  You shall attend meetings of the ministry each year, to remain active on the schedule.

What are the rewards of becoming a Lector?

As a Lector/Commentator you will…

  • engage in active participation of your faith,
  • strengthen and reinforce your faith by learning more about the Word of God,
  • experience fellowship among your brothers and sisters of our Ministry and the greater faith community,
  • establish a closer relationship and understanding of God, yourself, and the community,
  • and obtain personal growth within our faith.

Suggested Readings

What does the ministry offer?
Is there training involved?
What materials are provided?

Our Ministry offers a workbook of readings for the current liturgical year to assist with preparation, training, meetings (faith sharing and fellowship), advance monthly schedules, and commissioning of lectors.

Orientation and training is conducted with each new Lector, before their first scheduled reading. The time and date of the orientation is usually conducted before or after a particular Saturday or Sunday Mass or other date/time based on the availability of the new lector and the head minister.

How  and when are schedules made?

Schedules are completed and sent out (via email) or hard copy (filed in the Sacristy) on the 20th of each month, prior to the month scheduled.

(i.e. The schedule for February will be sent out on the 20th of January).

The rotation of Lectors and Commentators are:

1. Lector I               First Reading                             (position #1 to #3)
2. Lector II              Second Reading                       (position #2 to #1)
3. Commentator    Intentions of the Mass               (position #3 to #2 etc.)

Special requests (vacation, sick, work, personal or other) must be prior to the 20th of each month, so schedules may be completed timely.  Otherwise, you are required to find an alternate to cover your scheduled assignment.

Monthly schedules (assignment(s), rotation of position(s), dates etc.) are subject to change, due to varying circumstances that may occur.
