Qualifications:
A suitable candidate should have a devotion to the Eucharist and possess
the time, health and willingness to serve in this capacity. The individual
must be confirmed and have an on going relationship with the parish.
Because the Eucharistic Minister is a minister of service, it is important
that the candidate possess a serious and mature faith commitment. The
person knows what it means to say, "the Body of Christ, the Blood
of Christ".
Demeanor
A strong reverence for what the Eucharistic Minister carries is to be
seen and felt by all; not a false humility, but a strong sense of joy
and delight in the very sharing of the Lord's body and blood. All are
part of the experience of sharing. Holy Communion is a communion of
persons in the Lord. This means there can be no rush. Eucharistic Ministers
should distribute the Body of Christ and Precious Blood with reverence,
dignity and personal attention, while still keeping the procession moving
steadily. The ministers are brothers and sisters in the very Body and
Blood being shared, not dispensing machines. Ministers not only speak
their faith in saying, "The Body of Christ," "The Blood
of Christ", but call for the faith of the communicant as well
Proper
Attire
The ministers should dress neatly, in a way consonant with the dignity
of their role. Good taste and common sense are the best guides in this
area, shorts or tank tops are never acceptable. Appropriate dress is
a sign of the reverence the minister has for the Eucharist and for the
importance of the ministry.
Assignment
and Arrival
Eucharistic Ministers should arrive for their assigned Mass at least
15 minutes prior the Mass; the Head Eucharistic Minister should arrive
at least 20 minutes prior to allow enough time for set-up. Respect for
the Eucharist and the Ministry demands that Ministers arrive on time
and fulfill their obligations when assigned. The confusion and disorder
that occurs when responsibilities are not fulfilled is disrespectful.
It is understood that emergencies do happen. If possible, in these circumstances,
call Dan or Joyce and leave a message.
