LONG
TERM STRATEGY
RESURRECTION OF THE LORD CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
STRATEGIC STEPS
" Strategic planning
" Financial aspects of a new building are considered during, or
at the end of, the strategic planning
" Building committee plans for the new building based on the strategic
plan
" Building committee later plans for the renovation of the church
STRATEGIC
PLANNING
" Core strategic planning committee coordinates strategic planning
sessions involving 20-30 parishioners.
" Develop a strategic plan to be distributed to the entire parish
" Determine projected number of parishioners (best to have this
info before the strategic planning begins)
EXAMPLES OF ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED:
" In five to ten years, what will religious education for children,
youth, adults look like?
" In five to ten years, what will social ministry look like? Will
we be running our own programs or primarily supporting other agencies
(e.g. Lighthouse, Meals on Wheels, River of Life, etc.)? Will we be
cooking on site to feed the homeless? Will we be feeding on-site?
" What religious programs might be changed or added (e.g. multi-parish
cooperative events, right-to-life)?
" What non-religious programs might be initiated (e.g. self-help,
craft, foreign language courses, computer, learning to play musical
instruments, expanded young adult programs)?
" Projected number of priests, deacons
" Projected number of employees
" Lease out space for additional income (e.g. daycare center, classrooms)?
" Need for large area (receptions for weddings, funerals, large
parish gatherings, etc.)?
" Rectory on site?
" How many masses?
" When do we start construction of new building? (Existing building
debt paid off, how much is saved per month, how much will the diocese
lend, how much do we need to save, when and how fast does construction
cost increase, how much will the building cost, will be able to pay
our bills after the new building is built, etc. etc.)
" Possible problem: A building that costs $3,000,000 today may
cost $700,000 to $1,000,000 more two to three years after the economy
turns around.
" When do we start renovation of the church building (expand worship
area, change layout and finish of other areas, how much, how long after
completion of the new building)?
" What governmental laws, rules and codes do we need to know in
advance (height limit, floor area allowed, etc.)?
FINANCIAL
ASPECTS OF A NEW BUILDING
" Building fund projection (how much cash do we need and when will
we have it?)
" Estimated building cost (taking into account construction cost
increases that are inevitable after the recession ends)
" Any financial assistance from the diocese possible (diocesan
road map calls for $2.5M for new parishes and facilities and management
of land assets)?
" Terms of a loan from the diocese; how large a loan? interest
rate? repayment schedule?
" Projected financial statement after new building built (will
the expected revenues be enough to pay operating expenses and building
debt?)
DESIGN
ELEMENTS OF A NEW BUILDING
" Size of building allowed based on land availability, density,
height
" Zoning considerations (density, height)
" Desired space for classrooms/conference rooms, offices, storage,
kitchen, etc.
" Size of kitchen; how many people can the kitchen cook for?; certified?;
capacity and capability of equipment; cost
" Can anything be done about the inadequate parking?
" Can we provide access to the upper floor (if there is one) without
elevators?
DESIGN
ELEMENTS OF THE CHURCH
" Remove the community bathrooms?
" Expand one of the chapels?
" Location of the alter/change seating arrangements?
