Rules of Saint Benedict

1. First of all, love the Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. (Dt. 6:5)

2. Love your neighbor as yourself. (Lk. 10:27)

3. Do not kill. (Lk. 18:20)

4. Do not commit adultery. (Mt. 19:18)

5. Do not steal. (Ex. 20:15)

6. Do not covet. (Rom. 13:9)

7. Do not bear false witness. (Mk. 10:19)

8. Honor all men. (1 Pt. 2:17)

9. Do unto others as you would have done to yourself. (Tb. 4:15)

10. Deny yourself, in order to follow Christ. (Lk. 9:23)

11. Chastise the body. (1 Cor. 9:27)

12. Do not seek after delights. (2 Pt. 2:13)

13. Love fasting. (Jl. 1:14; 2:12, 15)

14. Relieve the poor. (Tb. 4:7)

15. Cloth the naked. (Is. 58:7)

16. Visit the sick. (Mt. 25:36)

17. Bury the dead. (Tb. 1:18; 2:4, 7-8)

18. Help and console the sorrowing. (Is. 1:17)

19. Comfort the sad. (1 Thes. 5:14)

20. Withdraw yourself from worldly ways.

21. Prefer nothing to the love of Christ. (Mt. 10:37-38)

22. Do not give way to anger. (Mt. 5:22)

23. Do not harbor revenge in your mind. (Eph. 4:26)

24. Do not foster guile or deceit in your heart.

25. Do not make an artificial peace. (Rom. 12:18)

26. Do not forsake charity. (1 Pt. 4:8)

27. Do not swear at all, lest your swear proves false.

28. Speak the truth with heart and mouth. (Ps. 15:3)

29. Do not return evil for evil. (1 Thes. 5:15) (1 Pt. 3:9)

30. Do not do any injury; but rather patiently bear an injury done to you. (1 Cor. 6:7)

31. Love your enemies. (lk. 6:27-55)

32. Do not speak ill of those who speak ill of you, but rather speak well of them. (1 Pt. 3:9)

33. Suffer persecution for justice sake. (Mt. 5:10)

34. Do not be proud.

46. Desire life everlasting with spiritual thirst. (Phil. 1:23)

47. Have death always before your eyes. (Mt. 24:42)

48. Observe at every hour the actions of your life. (Dt. 4:9)

50. Dash at once against Christ the evil thoughts that rise in the mind. (Ps. 137:9)

51. Reveal all such things to your spiritual Father.

52. Keep your mouth from evil and wicked words.

53. Do not talk too much. (Prv. 10:19

54. Do not speak vain words, nor laugh too much. (Mt. 12:36-37)

55. Do not love immoderate or boisterous laughter. (Sir. 21:23)

56. Willingly listem to holy readings. (Lk. 11:28)

57. Pray often devoutly. (Col. 4:2)

58. With tears and sighs, daily to confess your past evils to God in prayer and to amend them for the time to come. (Ps. 6:7-8)

59. Do not fulfill the desires of the flesh, and hate self-will. (Gal. 5:16-17)

60. Obey the Abbot in all things, though he himself (which God forbid) should do otherwise, being mindful of that precept of our Lord who says: "Do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example" (Mt. 23:3)

61. Do not desire to be called holy before you are, but first, be holy, so that you may truly be called so. (Mt. 6:1)

62. Daily, fulfill in deeds the commandments of God. (Sir. 6:37)

63. Love chastity. (1 Tm.5:22)

64. Hate no man. (Lv. 19:17)

65. Flee envy and emulation. (Jacob 3:14,16)

66. Do not love contention. (2 Tm. 2:24)

67. Shun arrogance.

68. Reverence the Elders. (Lv. 19:32)

69. Love inferiors. (1 Tm. 5:1)

70. For Christ's sake, pray for your enemies. (Mt. 5:44)

71. Make peace with adversaries before the setting of the sun. (Eph. 4:26)

72. And never loose hope in God's mercy.
