I. Introductory Rites:
Greeting: Opening Song: # 684 "The Lord Is My Light" or # 671 "Hosea"
Invitation to Prayer: Opening Prayer: (p.17 B-6)
Lord, in our grief we turn
to you.
Are you not the God of Love
who opens your ears to all?
Listen to our prayers for your servant N.,
whom you have called out of this world:
lead him/her to your kingdom of light and peace
and count him/her among the saints in glory.
We ask this through Christ
our Lord.
R. Amen.
II. Liturgy of the Word
First Reading from the Old Testament (p.39, C-3 Book of Wisdom 3:1-6,9):
A reading from the second Book of Wisdom
The souls of the just are
in the hand of God
And no torment shall touch them.
They seemed, in the view of the foolish to be dead;
And their passing away was thought an affliction
And their going forth from us, utter destruction.
But they are in peace.
For if in the eyes of men, indeed they be punished.
Yet is their hope full of immortality;
Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed,
Because God tried them,
And found them worthy of himself.
As gold in the furnace, he proved them,
And as sacrificial offerings he took them to himself.
Those who trust in him shall understand the truth,
And the faithful shall abide with him in love:
Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones,
And his care is with his elect.
The Word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm: (Cantor/Reader); p. 46 R&A Music Book D-8. 122: 1-2, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
Beside restful waters he leads me; He refreshes my soul.
R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
He guides me in right paths
For his name's sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil;
For you are at my side With your rod and your staff That give me courage.
R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
You spread the table before
me In the sight of my foes;
You anoint my head with oil; My cup overflows.
R: The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Only goodness and kindness follow me All the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of the LORD For years to come.
R: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Second Reading: (Reader2)
p. 64 E-10 We have a building from God, eternal in heaven
2 Corinthians 5:1, 6-10
A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians
Brothers and sisters:
We know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a
building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.
We are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the
body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are
courageous, we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. Therefore,
we aspired to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense, according
to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.
The word of the Lord.
Alleluia Verse: p. 143 R&A Music Book- Matthew 11:28 (If there is only one reading the Alleluia will follow the Responsorial .)
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.
(Lent): p.49 R&A Music Book F-7 John 11:25a, 26
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless Glory.
I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord;
whoever believes in me will never die.
Gospel Reading p.70 Matthew 5:1-12a
+ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
When Jesus saw the crowds,
he went up to the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to
him. He began to teach them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven,
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."
The Gospel of the Lord.
